  • Open and distance learning in the Gobi desert: non-formal education for nomadic women
    Mongolia provides an interesting case study of online and distance education in a country undergoing rapid economic and political transition. This paper describes the country’s first open and distance learning project specifically for non-formal education, and considers the lessons of the project for future programme developers and policy makers.

    The vision of the MIDAS NGO is to create an information-based society in Mongolia that will improved the quality of life of citizens and intensified all economic sectors of the country by developing Information and Communications Technology sector as a one of the competitive sector.
  • UNITeS Mongolia
    UNITeS is collaborating with UNDP to enhance the ICT capacities of students and the educated workforce by familiarising them with using ICT to solve real-life problems, expanding the uses and opportunities of ICT to enhance the lives of people in Mongolia. One volunteer, as a Content/Electric Publishing specialist is teaching content creation, while another volunteer is a Network Specialist, responsible for building the capacity of national technicians in designing, establishing and managing computer networks. This project is part of the global UN volunteer initiative to help bridge the digital divide.
  • Mongolia’s Knowledge Web Centre
    The first of its kind for the Mongolian educational sector, this Centre incorporates both English and local language text, providing electronic learning resources to teachers and students. Three pilot schools have created their web pages and linked to the Knowledge Web Centre. A special daily schedule of Internet surfing for teachers and pupils has been set up, as well as regular updates on current resources they can access on the web. One school is publishing a school newspaper using information from Internet. Within the project, Mongolian secondary schools are connected to the Internet, enabling students to participate I*EARN and Think Quest projects, establish new contacts, widen their knowledge of the world and to work on collaborative projects with similar schools.
