Educational Software Evaluation database
This initiative gathered more than 250 evaluations of educational software being used in Australia , Indonesia , India , Malaysia , Philippines and Thailand. The evaluated software is available in a number of languages, focuses on a wide range of topics and is based on diverse pedagogical approaches.
Pilipinas SchoolNet
The vision of Pilipinas SchoolNet is to build a network of schools throughout the Philippines that will leverage the Internet and related technologies to improve teaching and learning and to better prepare the Filipino youth to meet the demands of the knowledge economy. Pilipinas SchoolNet is committed to addressing the Digital Divide within the country--between those who have access to the Internet and those who do not--by promoting the effective and sustainable use of computers and the Internet in schools, particularly those in underserved communities.
University of the Philippines Open University
Established in February 23, 1995, the University of the Philippines - Open University offers masteral and short courses online, providing Filipinos' first taste of e-learning. On their website, information on admissions, registration requirements and faculty members can be accessed, along with programmes on offer, and the professional courses under the Continuing Education Programme. Furthermore, here the potential student can find information about specific programmes of interest from the UPOU staff. A comprehensive on-line library is also provided, offering supporting texts to all the courses on offer.
Y3K Foundation Computer Recycling Initiative
The objective of the Y3K Foundation is to provide access to computers and the Internet to the vast majority of Filipinos who otherwise would not have access to these technologies because of poverty. The Foundation selects its recipients of hardware, software, training, and support based on their interest, enthusiasm, and commitment, as well as their demonstrated ability to make their venture a productive ongoing concern.
text2teach revolutionizes elementary science education
Science classes in elementary schools in the Philippines will soon experience the benefits of multimedia learning. A new project called text2teach is using the power of mobile and satellite technology to deliver rich educational content to teachers and students even in the most outlying areas of the country. Launched on May 16 2003, text2teach is the initial Philippine-wide pilot of Bridgeit, a global programme developed jointly by Nokia, Pearson, the International Youth Foundation (IYF), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Infotech Training in Remote Places
The Infotech project aims to provide teachers and students from far flung areas of the country with the knowledge, skills, facilities, and the materials to use information technology and with access to information from the Internet. Infotech was piloted in 6 schools and 2 division offices in the two contiguous provinces of Antique and Guimaras in the West Visayas. The two central schools with access to Internet service serve as the downloading stations that access teachers’ lessons from the UNICEF website, www.unicef.org/teachers and www.unicef.org/voy as well as other websites focused on student learning. Downloaded materials are shared with the other schools and the division office.
Coca-Cola Computer Learning Centres
As part of Coca-Cola’s e-learning initiative rolling out in countries all over the Asia Pacific region, the company has partnered with the Foundation for Information Technology Education and Development (FIT-ED) to establish 15 state-of-the-art, Internet-connected computer centres in remote public schools across the Philippines. Entitled “ed.venture”, this community programme initiative has benefited over 15,000 Filipino schoolchildren in its first phase, while centres are also open for community use. Meanwhile, a comprehensive teacher-training component of the programme has trained over 630 public high school teachers and administrators.
Pilot Multipurpose Community telecentres in Selected Barangays in the Philippines - This project set up multipurpose community telecentres in four barangays (villages) in Mindanao. The MCTs are meant to deliver Internet services, with a primary focus on health care, agriculture, education and livelihoods. The project aims to investigate the legal, financial, operational and technical issues surrounding the establishment and maintenance of MCTs in the Philippines, identify the specific ICT needs of people in the rural villages and enlist the participation of local people and organisations in developing the conceptual framework for the MCTs.
