 2008 UNESCO Craft Award of Excellence for Handicrafts:
UNESCO is proud to announce that the Award of Excellence has been awarded to 144 new products this year, including 29 from East Asia, 40 from South Asia, 15 from South-East Asia, and 60 from West-Central Asia. UNESCO would like to congratulate the winners and thank all the 580 applicants for their efforts in submitting their products this year.

 2008 UNESCO Craft Award of Excellence for Handicrafts: 15 South-East Asian awardees exhibited in Bangkok

From 14 to 19 October 2008, the 15 products awarded this year in South-East Asia will be exhibited at the Bangkok International Gift Fair, IMPACT Muang Tong Thani, Bangkok Thailand. An awarding ceremony will take place at the SACICT booth, located in the Challenger Hall, Lobby 3, Booth I2-10, J1-9.

Applications for the 2008 Award are now
available.
   
Exhibition of awarded products from 2007 at the Amarin Plaza, Bangkok, Thailand, from 24 April to 5 May 2008. A craft evaluation workshop will also be conducted on 30 April and 1 May 2008.

The World Eco-Fiber and Textile (WEFT) Art hits Japan. Exhibitions and fashion shows will be held in Tokyo and in Tokushima in April 2008. [more]
 

UNESCO Award 'Award of Excellence for Handicrafts' Asia Strategy Meeting, Bangkok, Thailand, 17-19 March 2008
UNESCO Bangkok Office will organize a strategy meeting for the Asia region in Bangkok, Thailand, on 17-19 March 2008. This meeting aims to update the Asia strategy, based on experiences in the four Asia sub-regions, in Africa and in the Carribeans. The meeting will be attended by key partners and coordinators of the programme, and will address issues such as implementation procedures at the regional, sub-regional and national levels, periodicity of the programme, branding, capacity-building, and marketing opportunities.
 

World Eco Fiber and Textile (W.E.F.T) Forum, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, 12- 14 September 2008
World experts will gather to Kuching, Malaysia, to talk about traditional textiles, natural fibers and natural dyes. Activities also include a textile exhibition, a craft bazaar and an optional visit an upriver longhouse to study the weavers at work. Visit http://www.jungleartsandflora.com/.
 

Rainforest World Craft Bazaar, Sarawak, East Malaysia 9 -15 July 2008
The first Rainforest World Craft Bazaar will be held at the Sarawak Museum in Kuching, Sarawak, East Malaysia, in conjunction with the world- renowned Rainforest World Music Festival. Exhibition of South-East Asian Award products at the Maison & Objet Fair, 7-11 September 2007
As promotion for craftspersons and artisans, there will be an exhibition of selected 2005-2006 awarded products in Paris from the 7th to the 11th of September 2007. The exhibition will take place at the 'Maison & Objet' International Fair (Paris-Nord Villepinte) where a complimentary space has been made available by the organizers, Ateliers d'Art de France. Fourth International Felt Symposium, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, 18-31 July 2007
The Central Asia Crafts Support Association (CACSA) invites you to discover the secrets of Kyrgyzstan's Felts and its ornaments through an artistic exchange around the magnificent Issyk-Kul Lake. A major theme of the Fourth International Felt Symposium is artistic dialogue and exchange. The programme of the Symposium includes an international conference «The Use of Ornamental Motives in Traditional and Modern Felting», an exhibition "Ornaments in Felting", and workshops on felting. The Award in Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, Santa Fe, USA, 14-15 July 2007
Following the success of the 2006 event, selected Award of Excellence products will be displayed and sold at the 2007 Santa Fe International Folk Art Market (14-15 July 2007). Visit the market's website.

Awarded Artists to Tour the US

Edric Ong and several associated artists from Malaysia plan to tour the US in July 2007.

Several products from Mr Ong's company, specialising in Malaysian textiles, have been granted the Award of Excellence for Handicrafts in recent years. This picture is of a traditional thai revival wood block printed textile, which won a SEAL in 2006. In additional to the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, the tour will encompass the Los Angeles California Gift Show in July 17 - 24, (website: www.californiagiftshow.com), the Textile Museum in Washington DC on July 25 - 26, and the Malaysian Consulate in New York City from July 27 - 30.
