Gender in Education Network in Asia (GENIA)

GENIA is a network of gender focal points in Ministries of Education across Asia designed to share information and lessons on gender and education. Here you will find information about the network, and it's activities, members, and productions.

The power of networking

The strong cooperation between gender focal points has shown to be an important way of ensuring a focus on Gender in Education.

On the 20 May, 2003 gender focal points from Ministries of Education in South Asia gathered in Islamabad to discuss gender issues in education prior to a Education Ministers meeting from 20 to 23 May, 2003. As a result, the major outcome of the meeting, the Islamabad Declaration, included a significant number of suggestions coming from the gender focal point meeting.

This is a good example of how networking and careful preparation can lead to the adaptation of significant recommendations. It is now up togender focal points themselves, other advocacy groups and international agencies to make sure that the recommendations are translated into action.
