In October 2009 the official name of the EETAP project changed to Ethics and Climate Change in Asia and the Pacific (ECCAP) project.

The request for contributions continues, similar to that made at the time of the consultation meeting held with AASREC (see the Program Document for Expert Consultation on the Project held on 25 August 2009, and the report of the meeting). A meeting was also held on 18 September in Manila.

An earlier call for specific feedback and comments was made on 26 June 2009. The formal launch to this project as the Conference on Ethics of Energy Technologies in Asia and the Pacific held in Bangkok 26-28 September, 2007 [abstracts, pdf file (232kb); meeting report, pdf file(347kb)]. After an intense and stimulating three days of presentations and group activity, we emerged with 14 cross-cultural and multidisciplinary working groups to take the project forward [invite to groups, MSWord file (2.8MB)]. There was discussion of a number of the reports, and a chance to meet working group chairs (WG1,2,4,5,7,9,10,11,12,13,14), during the Sixth Ordinary Session of COMEST, 15-19 June, 2009, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. A list of meetings associated with the ECCAP project is here.

The project calls for developing dialogues within each participating country and between countries on the results of research, future research needs, policy lessons and policy recommendations in regard to the ethical issues of energy-related technologies, and related environmental and human security issues. How should each country make decisions on the energy technologies that they develop and which strategies to follow, given the environmental crisis and the variety of proposed benefits and potential risks of different technologies? As countries in the Asia-Pacific region face mounting external pressures to decide on their energy policy, what are the values and questions that exist inside the region for ethical deliberation over the choices for energy?

Membership is open to all interested parties with experience in energy issues and environmental ethics, from fields including but not limited to engineering, philosophy, government, institutional advisory bodies, civil society organizations, energy-related industries, education, and academia.
