    Strong and independent ethnic media are vital to Myanmar’s transition towards democracy. Most ethnic minority media groups have been abroad since their establishment due to long-standing media restrictions imposed by the former military junta. However, with the ongoing media reforms, Myanmar ethnic media groups have been allowed greater freedom to operate inside the country and are gaining more acceptance by the government and mainstream media.

UNESCO Bangkok has a Project Office established in Yangon, Mayanmar. Through this, and in collaboration with the National Commission for Myanmar, UNESCO Bangkok is able to develop programmes and take action in Myanmar. 

UNESCO’s action in Myanmar reflect the UN Strategic Framework for Myanmar 2012-2015.

UNESCO Bangkok has been preparing a UNESCO Country Planning Document Myanmar 2012-2015.
