Annual Meeting of the MOWCAP Bureau, 12-14 March 2013, Cambodia

14.03.2013

The Memory of the World Committee for Asia-Pacific (MOWCAP) Bureau will be held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from 12 to 14 March 2013.

The MOW Programme is an international cooperation strategy aimed at safeguarding, protecting and facilitating access to and the use of documentary heritage, especially heritage that is rare and endangered. UNESCO launched the Programme in 1992 to guard against collective amnesia by calling upon the preservation of invaluable archive holdings and library collections all over the world and ensuring their wide dissemination.

In the Asia Pacific region, many libraries, archives and memory institutions face formidable challenges - economic, climatic and geographic - in achieving these goals. MOWCAP aims not only to assist preservation of and universal access to documentary heritage of the Asia/Pacific region, but also to increase awareness of the existence and significance of the heritage.

At this annual meeting, the Bureau will review the progress the MOWCAP programme has made in 2012 and agree plans for 2013. It is expected to meet in a shared session with the to-be-established Cambodian MOW Committee, and to visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, whose archive is inscribed on both the Asia Pacific and International MOW Registers.

UNESCO is co-organizing the event and will be providing monitoring and evaluation to the Programme.
