Youth at the Heart of the 2030 Agenda: The Case for Space

Call for participation: YOUTH NEWSROOM for the roundtable, 30 November – 2 December, Bangkok, Thailand

 

UNDP, UNESCO, UNFPA and Restless Development are organizing a Roundtable Discussion Youth at the Heart of the 2030 Agenda: The Case for Space (C4S) to promote youth’s civic engagement in Asia and the Pacific and make their C4S in a view to strengthen civic space offline and online available for youth to actively engage on sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Over three days, 100 young leaders, researchers, reporters, youth NGOs, civil society representatives and development partners will gather in Bangkok to share their experiences, discuss about challenges and opportunities, and identify areas of action for youth to effectively engage in delivering on SDGs.


WHAT WILL BE DISCUSSED AT THE ROUND TABLE?

What are the vision and the aspirations of youth in regards to 2030 agenda?

What is the enabling environment both offline and online that ensures young people can be partners and leaders in the implementation of the global development agenda?

What role can relevant actors in social media and digital communication play to enhance and protect digital spaces and freedoms while ensuring online safety for young people to more effectively engage in political and social debates in Asia-Pacific?

What role can governments and development actors play in strengthening policy, practices and support mechanisms for youth development?

What are the needed capacities and the requirements for young people to more effectively engage in social and political debates in Asia-Pacific?


THE YOUTH NEWSROOM

A space for engaging youth to practice journalism skills and lead the communication about issues that affect them the most

A group of 10 young reporters and journalism students from universities across Asia and the Pacific will gather from 30 November to 2 December 2016 to produce news stories and multimedia reportage during The Case for Space Conference in Bangkok. A team of experienced journalists and communication specialists will coordinate the newsroom. Selected reporters not based in Thailand will receive funding for their travel to and accommodation in Bangkok.

The Newsroom team will be given:

the opportunity to engage in debates and raise awareness on the issue of youth’s engagement and participation in civic space and sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific
exposure to experts, youth voices and data on these issues
the opportunity to practice journalism skills and reporting on issues in a view to amplify their voices at the national, regional and global levels
the opportunity to interview leaders, experts, representatives from UN agencies and embassies
a unique intercultural and networking experience with young reporters and journalism students form the region


HOW WILL THE NEWSROOM WORK?

On site: a one-day workshop will be organized prior to the event with training and briefing sessions. During the event, participants will be assigned roles in the newsroom as well as deadlines to meet on a daily basis with support from the coordination team. Own equipment will be required (personal laptop and smartphone)

Contents:
The reporting team will produce 3 types of contents using mobile-journalism technique
Multimedia Daily News:short articles, interviews and videos presenting highlights of the event
Feature stories: longer, analytical reports addressing the issues discussed during the event
Youth voices on civic space in Asia and the Pacific: the team will also collect statements and testimonies from the young participants of the round table on the challenges and opportunities for youth’s participation in the region. These quotes will feed into a report to be presented afterwards to policy makers to raise awareness on this issue.

via the event website www.case4space.org , the communication platforms of the event partners and the networks of the newsroom participants.
