Invitation to the Bangkok Launch of "The World Migration Report: Communicating Effectively about Migration", followed by a Discussion, 20 February 2012
20.02.2012...
The International Organization for Migration Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific will launch the latest World Migration Report (WMR) on 20 February 2012 from 18.00-21.00 hrs.
This event will be an opportunity to present some of the findings from the 2011 WMR on the challenges of communicating on migration. The report contains a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing public opinion and what often lies at the core of prevailing negative sentiments.
The WMR 2011 has been recognized as an important instrument in creating a better understanding of the role of the media and politics in shaping attitudes towards migration and migrants. The report calls for a fundamental shift in the way we communicate on migration, with more informed, transparent political and public debate.
The introduction of the WMR will be followed by comments from three local experts who will provide us with a regional perspective on the situation. The general discussion might usefully explore further what are the key factors in Asia Pacific influencing public opinion about migration, and how we can use this understanding to inform positive attitudes and proactive approaches on migration in the region.
