Ma’anqiao Village in Sichuan Province, China Received the Jury Commendation for Innovation in 2011 UNESCO Heritage Awards

5 January 2012 – UNESCO recognized the outstanding post-earthquake recovery of Ma’anqiao Village in Sichuan, China with an award ceremony on Wednesday, 21 December 2011 at 9:30 a.m.at the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in Beijing, China.

The demonstration project of Ma’anqiao Village which focused on the reconstruction of residential community composed of dwellings and public service facilities received the Jury Commendation for Innovation in the 2011 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

The jury praised the project as follows: “One of the villages devastated by the 2008 earthquake, it is a noteworthy example of post-disaster reconstruction that fits comfortably in its immediate cultural and environmental context.”

Ms Beatrice Kaldun, Programme Specialist for Culture of UNESCO Beijing office presented the official plaque to Dr. Zhao Hui (Director of Department of Village and Township Construction, Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China, MOHURD) and Prof. Edward Ng (President of Wu Zhi Qiao (Bridge to China) Charitable Foundation). Certificates of recognition were also presented to core members of the Ma’anqiao village project.

As the project advisor, Dr. Qiu Baoxing, the Vice President of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China (MOHURD) also witnessed the ceremony as the Guest of Honour.

In 2011, a total of 34 entries from 10 countries in the region were submitted for consideration. In addition to Ma’anqiao Village, nine other projects were also awarded in 2011. The UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards recognize the efforts of private individuals and organizations that have successfully restored and conserved structures and buildings of heritage value in the region.

Entries are now being accepted for the 2012 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. The deadline for receipt of materials is 31 March 2012.
