UNESCO’s Centre of Excellence for Business Skills Development (CEBSD) Strengthens capacity building of youth with new entrepreneurial Skills

As an innovative public-private partnership between Yangon University of Economics (YUE), UNESCO and PepsiCo, CEBSD has been implementing training activities with the aim of promoting the employability and business skills of Myanmar youth since its establishment in August 2014. In line with its skill development programmes and workshops, CEBSD offered a second intake for the new 40-hour training course, ‘Start Your Own Business’, in October 2016, after the very well received first intake it had organized in August.

At the Myanmar Entrepreneurship Summit 2016 held this month at Myanmar International Convention Center (MICC-2) in Naypyitaw, State Counsellor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi called for upgrading the capacity-building of the citizens, considering it as the most important factor in national development in her keynote address (source – Mizzima 23 Oct 2016).

With ILO as a resource partner, the ‘Start Your Own Business’ course is a training programme focused on starting and improving small business as a strategy for creating more and better employment in developing economies.  Its ‘Generate Your Business Idea’ (GYB) module leads participants through a step-by-step process of identifying and analyzing their business ideas, and the ‘Start Your Own Business’ module builds on GYB by exposing the business idea to scrutiny from market, legal and financial perspectives. At the end of the programme, participants get a chance to develop their own business plan supported by an action plan to guide them on the next steps they need to take to get the business started. The programme is highly practical and incorporates best practice adult learning methodologies.

CEBSD will continue to offer the popular course on a regular basis and further advance youth’s business skills by offering the course ‘Improve Your Business’ (IYB), a 6-module training programme for young entrepreneurs who wants to increase sales, reduce costs and build a sustainable business.
