UNESCO Pacific World Heritage Workshop (Apia, Samoa, 5-9 September 2011)
30.01.2012Despite its extraordinary cultural and biological diversity and richness, the Pacific is recognised by the World Heritage Committee as one of the most under-represented regions on the World Heritage List. Moreover, the Pacific region requires special attention for the safeguarding of its heritage, as it faces special challenges related to its unique geographical, cultural and social characteristics.
Experts from fields of heritage preservation in the Pacific region as well as representatives of Advisory Bodies (IUCN & ICOMOS) and regional agencies, universities and NGOs got together at regional workshops held on a regular basis in the region and developed a regional strategy and action plan in order to ensure better coordination and optimize resources.
This report is a final report of the 4th Pacific World Heritage Workshop held in September 2011 in Apia, Samoa. The Apia Workshop provided the opportunity for a broad ranging discussion on the achievements and remaining challenges facing the Pacific region. The report provides a summary of the discussions and recommendations from the Workshop as well as the updated Pacific World Heritage Action Plan (2010-2015). The reports of Pacific countries and territories presented at the Workshop and included in the final report provide a wealth of information on the latest situation and issues surrounding World Heritage in each country and territory.
