Signing of agreement between UNESCO Bangkok and the APF

On 2 February a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between UNESCO Bangkok and the Asia Pacific Forum of Human Rights Institutions (APF), based in Sydney, was signed by Mr Sheldon Shaeffer, Director of UNESCO Bangkok and Mr Kieren Fitzpatrick, Director of APF.

The APF is a regional organization of National Human Rights Institutions in 17 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. It was established to assist members in the establishment of new institutions in compliance with the ‘Paris Principles’.

The agreement set out common goals shared by UNESCO Bangkok and the APF. It offers a Framework for Cooperation in building capacity and promoting human rights education in the region in line with the World Programme for Human Rights Education.

In addition, the framework will assist in establishing new National Human Rights Institutions in the Asia and Pacific region. And it explores areas of common interest for cooperation, such as trafficking, gender inequality, racism, discrimination and intolerance, HIV/AIDS, disabilities, bioethics, cultural diversity, etc.
