The International Council for the Study of Pacific Islands (ICSPI)

ICSPI was established in 2001 and focuses on social and human science developments in Pacific Island countries. The creation of ICSPI is particularly important as social scientists in these nations, with the exception of New Zealand and Australia, had largely been marginalized from networks in Asia, due to the high cost of travelling to international conferences and meetings.

ICSPI was established to:

promote research and teaching for the benefit of the peoples of the Pacific Islands

maintain a resource base for Pacific Islands research

facilitate access to research

promote the recognition of Pacific Islands' distinctive contribution to social science knowledge

encourage interaction between scholars of and from the region
