Indonesia

Women's Studies in Indonesia is a ‘handmaiden' of the Indonesian state. There are now 140 Women's Studies Centres in universities nationwide established and mandated by the Indonesian government, and to a large degree embedded as ‘family studies.' The chief role of these centres is to assist local governments in research on gender for planning and policy formulation. Capacity has yet to be built for collecting types of gender-disaggregated data in order to arrive at conclusive analyses on women and men's social conditions. Whether these centres have strong linkages with the local women's movements or communities, however, has yet to be explored.
