Ethics of Science and Technology Regional Consultation

Undertaking research on ethics of science and technology: Asian perspectives

A two day consultation was organized by our RUSHSAP, from 10-11 October 2002 in Bangkok. The objective was for a small group of experts (one from each sub-region: South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia) in the fields of ethics and philosophy to help RUSHSAP prepare a draft agenda in preparation for a region-wide Asia-Pacific meeting on this topic in 2003. The issues and questions raised in this small group were very useful both for our immediate activities and our long-term programme agenda to achieve UNESCO's objectives on ethics and philosophy for the Asia-Pacific region (See Report).

Based on the research issues identified at the consultations, four areas - bioethics, ethics of nano-technology, ethics of Information Communications Technology (ICT), ethics of economics/development - will be the focus of activities for the Asia-Pacific region. For expert discussion on these issues and to identify ways of addressing them through research a regional meeting is being organized from 5-7 November 2003. Specific issues will be addressed and activities will be designed at the country and/or sub-regional levels for the next biennium (See Background Note).
