Special Programmes
The sectors at UNESCO Bangkok work together on special programmes relevant to the Asia and Pacific region and beyond. Currently, we are highlighting the following special programmes.
As the Asia and the Pacific Regional Bureau for Education, UNESCO Bangkok spearheads programmes and coordinates responses towards the achievement of the goals of Education for All (EFA). The Regional EFA site provides EFA-related history, data and resources from across the region allowing users to draw on regional expertise to aid in research, sound policy making and implementation of educational programming towards the attainment of quality education for all.
The effective use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can expand learning opportunities, improve education quality and further the quest for equality. The ICT in Education Asia and the Pacific Programme demonstrates how disparities in educational access and quality can be reduced with ICTs.
HIV Coordination, Adolescent Reproductive and School Health (HARSH)
UNESCO Bangkok provides technical and financial assistance to support country- and regional-level projects on HIV/AIDS and education, culture and social science. UNESCO's HIV Coordination, Adolescent Reproductive and School Health Unit works with the Education, Culture, and Social and Human Sciences Sectors as well as Information Knowledge Management Unit, to strengthen and expand UNESCO's response to HIV/AIDS-both regionally and at the country level. Capacity building, information collection and sharing, as well as advocacy are three key cross-cutting strategies in expanding UNESCO's work in the region.
Education for Sustainable Development
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a dynamic and expansive undertaking that envisions a world where every person has the chance to benefit from educational opportunities and to learn the lifestyles, behaviours and values necessary to create a sustainable future.
Assessment, Information Systems, Monitoring and Statistics Unit (AIMS) is the programme unit of the Asia-Pacific Office of the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) Regional Advisor. Its main focus is the development of capacity of the Member States’ national statistical information systems for policy formulation, planning, monitoring, evaluation and assessment, in areas of UNESCO mandate and supporting efforts to achieve Education for All by 2015.
Under UNESCO's special mandate for ethnic and indigenous minorities, the Trafficking and HIV/AIDS Project tackles the linked triad of problems—HIV/AIDS, trafficking, and non-traditional drug use—in the Greater Mekong Subregion, by researching, developing, and implementing programmes which crosscut these issues to address the needs of at-risk and vulnerable populations in the area.
