| Requirements | - Scientist Position: expected to achieve outstanding research results. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. at the time of appointment.
- Technical Scientist Positions: expected to achieve outstanding technological development and innovation. A Ph.D. or equivalent with extensive experience acceptable.
- Postdoctoral Researcher Position: expected to improve his/her capacity as an independent scientist. Applicants must be within five years since awarded a Ph.D. at the time of appointment. Who are expecting to be awarded a Ph.D. by the time of appointment will also be considered.

| Employment System | - IFREE operates the following terminable employment system in order to carry out world-leading researches and to develop human resources based upon an appropriate and strict performance evaluation system.
- Scientist: The contract term is five Japanese fiscal years. A screening to be promoted to Senior Scientist is conducted before the contract expires.
- Technical Scientist: One contract term is three Japanese fiscal years, and the contract can be renewed once. (The total contract term is six Japanese fiscal years.) May re-apply for the same or higher position before/when the contract expires.
- Postdoctoral Researcher: One contract term is one Japanese fiscal year and the contract can be renewed twice. (The total contract term is three Japanese fiscal years.)
- Apply discretionary working hour system and annual evaluation system of research results.

| Terms of Employment | - Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC’s bylaws, taking
academic career, research ability and research role in IFREE into consideration (annual salary system). Appointment level for positions will be determined by IFREE after the interview based upon the discussion with the successful candidates.
e.g. Postdoctoral Researcher: JPY4,400,000~5,200,000⁄year Scientist⁄Technical Scientist: JPY5,200,000~JPY7,000,000⁄year - Travel allowance will be provided in accordance with JAMSTEC’s bylaws.
- The participant and JAMSTEC will share the premiums for insurance and
labor insurance according to the current statutory proportion. - Housing lease service available, EXEPT for the Postdoctoral Researcher.
- Allowance for commuting expenses will be provided.
- No bonus⁄retirement allowance provided.
- Holidays and vacations: Saturday, Sunday, public holidays, year-end and
beginning of the year are holidays. There are annual vacations with pay, special vacations, and leave of absence for care and maternity leave. - Other: There are various kinds of subsidies available for personal
interests⁄welfare provided by JAMSTEC’s employees’ cooperative. |

Please identify which Research Topic (1 or 2) and Position (Scientist, Technical Scientist or Postdoctoral Researcher) you are applying for in the document.
- Reference (recommendation) letter written by a senior researcher, which should be sent directly to Research Support Dept. (address provided below) by POST. Applicant’s name should be written on the envelope.

- One copy of publication list and one copy of five (or less) representative publications.

| Selection and employment | Candidates will be selected based on submitted application material, followed by an interview currently scheduled in April 2010.
The successful candidates are expected to join us at June 1st, 2010, but the appointment date is negotiable. Research Team(s) to belong is also negotiable. |
