UNESCO-UNGEI Calendar 2011 for Promoting Gender Equality in Education

Five years to go until 2015: What have we accomplished?

UNESCO Bangkok, in collaboration with the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI), East Asia and the Pacific and South Asia, is pleased to share the 2011 calendar  that was produced as an outcome of the photo contest on the theme of: “Promoting Gender Equality in Education – five years to go until 2015: What have we accomplished?”

The contest is an annual activity aimed at promoting gender equality in education among government officials, teachers, students, development professionals and anyone with an interest in applying their photography skills for promoting the cause of gender equality in education. Images have proven to be an effective medium in conveying a better understanding of what gender equality to education, in education, and through education may mean to all of us.

This year, the contest attracted entries from 14 countries across the Asia-Pacific region. The photo entries were submitted by photographers from Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam. The organizers acknowledge the exceptional effort and sincerely thank all the photographers for their participation and contribution.

These visual demonstrations of ‘equality in action’ can help make the concept of gender equality more concrete. They also show that gender equality is actually not so difficult to achieve and that this is nothing threatening, sensitive, or complicated. Gender equality must become everyone’s business and priority, especially as we are committed to achieve Education for All by 2015.

It is hoped that throughout the coming year, this calendar will inspire us to accelerate our efforts to make gender equality a reality.
