The Kyrgyz Republic is a landlocked, mountainous country in Central Asia. It borders Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Kyrgyzstan also shares a large part of its south-eastern border with China. With an estimated population of 5.3 million as of 2011 (Central Intelligence Agency n.d.), 65% of Kyrgyz live in rural areas. The country’s small population, its isolated geographical location and limited resource base serve as significant barriers to international trade. Rural poverty, children’s rights and governance are the major development challenges faced by the country. Despite these drawbacks, Kyrgyz population is highly literate with a literacy rate above 98% (UNESCO 2008).
