- Improving quality of education (UNESCO 2008).
Proposed UNESCO interventions:
- Enhancing policy, planning, monitoring and coordination for achieving EFA;
- Supporting national efforts to achieve inclusive basic education for girls and boys;
- Supporting national efforts on non formal education (NFE) to improve the literacy rate and strengthen CLCs with special reference to women and excluded groups;
- Achieving Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) goals through developing monitoring tools, policy dialogue and curriculum reform; and
- Information and communication technologies (ICT) in teacher education (UNESCO 2008).
Major development partners activities in education and broad areas of intervention:
Asian Development Bank (ADB):
- Provides support towards smooth transition to a 12-year school system;
- Supports Secondary Education Support Program focusing on learning environment, curriculum and assessment, teacher education and development, institutional management and capacity building;
- Supports Teacher Education Project (TEP) for primary teacher training and a 16+ Skills for Employment program;
- Supports to build capacity in TVET project for a skilled and productive labor force to meet the market demand and reduce poverty;
- Supports the preparation and transition to School Sector Reform (SSR) and the broad capacity development for system readiness (ADB n.d.).
The World Bank:
- Expanding the supply of skilled and employable labor by increasing access to quality training programs, and by strengthening the technical and vocational education and training system;
- Promoting gender equality in education thus empowering women;
- Increasing access to and improve quality of school education, particularly basic education (Grades 1-8);
- Enhancing access, quality and relevance of higher education and research by promoting effective management and financial sustainability of academic institutions (World Bank n.d.(d)).
United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA):
- Provides awareness and reproductive health education to secondary school children.
United Nations International Children's Education Fund (UNICEF):
- Supports the government both in terms of national policy and decentralized planning;
- Supports Welcome to School Initiative aimed at increasing school enrolment particularly of girls;
- Supports a mapping exercise for disadvantaged families covering about 300,000 households in over 230 villages and 8 municipalities;
- Supports the development of codes of conduct for Schools as Zones of Peace (SZOP) and reformulating the programme to fit the current context;
- Supports the development of peace education curricula for formal and non-formal education sectors, produce peace education materials, train teachers/ facilitators;
- Supports disaster response preparedness activities in all sectors including education;
- Supports Non-Formal Education (NFE) through School Outreach, Flexible Schooling and Urban Out-of-school Programmes;
- Supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS;
- Under ECD, supports caregivers in making a positive difference to the care, emotional support and psychosocial development of their young children (UNESCO 2008).
World Food Programme (WFP):
- Provides mid-day meals to primary school children in 21 districts and mid-day meals and medicine to primary school children in additional 16 districts;
- Provides pre-school support to mothers and Infants (WFP n.d.).
