8th Consultation of Member States on the Implementation of the Convention and the Recommendation against Discrimination in Education

24.04.2012

UNESCO monitors the implementation of the Convention and the Recommendation against Discrimination in Education (1960).

The purpose of the Convention and the Recommendation is not only to eliminate discrimination in education, but also to encourage adoption of measures aimed at promoting equality of educational opportunities and treatment in this field.

The Convention and the Recommendation place an importance on the fundamental principles of non-discrimination and equality of educational opportunities. They have been recognised as a key pillar in the Education for All (EFA) process by UNESCO's Executive Board and occupy the foremost place among UNESCO's normative instruments in the field of education.

UNESCO is presently conducting the 8th Consultation of Member States on their implementation of the Convention and the Recommendations covering the period 2006-2011.

In particular, Member States are required to prepare a comprehensive report of good quality on the measures taken for the implementation of the Convention and the Recommendation in line with the Guidelines provided for this purpose.
