There are 361 educational institutions in Bhutan, most of them community and primary schools. More than 100 non formal education centers were established within the last decade. The government has earmarked a special budget of Nu 5 million every year for this purpose. An independent sector study showed that 82 percent of Internet usage is in e-mail correspondence in the education sector alone. - ICT Supported Distance Teacher Education in Bhutan
In Bhutan, the critical shortage of teachers is further exacerbated by a rapidly growing student population. The teacher-student ratio of 1 to 150 needs to be addressed in order to achieve better quality of education. Recent progress in information technology adoption and improvements in the telecommunication system has opened the doors to the possibility of using ICTs in a distance teacher education program.
