Lao PDR TVET Policy Review Final Consultation Meeting

UNESCO Expert Team meeting with officials of the Ministry of Education and Sports, Lao PDR ©UNESCO/Mary Anne Therese Manuson

28.03.2012

Recognising the importance of the continued development of the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system in Lao PDR, UNESCO provided policy advice and technical support to the Lao government in order to review its national TVET policies.

A UNESCO expert team undertook field missions in Vientiane and Luang Prabang in July and September 2011 to conduct consultations with various TVET stakeholders. These consultations were instrumental in identifying problems, constraints and opportunities which future policy directions may address.

In light of the above, the Ministry of Education and Sports, with support from UNESCO Bangkok, will organise a final consultation meeting at the Lane Xang Hotel in Vientiane Capital on 29 March 2012. The meeting's objectives are:

(1) to share the key findings obtained from the TVET Policy Review and discuss the policy recommendations developed by the UNESCO Review Team, and;

(2) to identify the main policy issues which call for necessary attention from the Lao government and require possible joint action and support from development partners, including UNESCO.

Attending the event are officials and representatives from the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the Ministry of Finance, the Lao National Commission for UNESCO, Chambers of Commerce, Trade Working Groups, Public and Private TVET Schools and international development partners such as the Asian Development Bank, Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) , the World Bank, the International Labour Organization and the United Nations Development Programme.

UNESCO will formally present a comprehensive report of the TVET Policy Review to the Lao government at the national consultation meeting. The final report will be made available for download following the conclusion of the event.
