The "Group of 77 and China" celebrates the 40th anniversary of World Heritage
06.02.2012To mark the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention in 1972, the General Conference of UNESCO adopted the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
Forty years later, the World Heritage List includes 936 properties considered as having outstanding universal value: 725 cultural, 183 natural and 28 mixed properties in 153 States Parties. To date 188 States Parties have ratified the Convention, which makes the treaty the most widely recognized for heritage protection. Through this exhibition, organized in partnership with the World Heritage Centre, the Group of 77 and China wishes show the diversity of sites of its 132 members on the World Heritage List and recalled "the need to protect and preserve the cultural and natural heritage of mankind". Created in 1964 by 77 States, the Group of 77 or G-77 and China (since the accession of China) is an intergovernmental group of developing countries at the United Nations aimed at promoting South-South and their economic interests. Chairman of the Group in Paris is currently provided by Gabon.
