HAB Terms of Reference and Programmes

TOR of WESTPAC-HAB Programme for 2008-2010

  1. conduct IOC/WESTPAC/HAB strategic meeting in conjunction with the 8th IOC/WESTPAC International Scientific Symposium for discussion and decision of its activity plan
  2. establish a WESTPAC/HAB regional network for dissemination of information, announcements regarding regional HAB activities
  3. provide coordination for the Asia GEOHAB project
  4. further continue capacity building on HAB study with more priority to topics related to Asia GEOHAB focal subjects
  5. further develop HABSEA Portal
  6. seek interaction with other projects on HAB implemented by other international organization and interact with other IOC regional networks or groups on HAB
  7. Work towards the establishment of a network of national experts for collation of reports on HAB events to be entered into the IOC-ICES-PICES Harmful Algal Event Data-base (HAE-DAT)

TOR of WESTPAC-HAB Programme for 2006-2007

  1. to organize strategic planning workshops
  2. to implement the WESTPAC-HAB TTR project
  3. to further develop the HABSEA Portal to be useful to WESTPAC
  4. to develop red tide monitoring network on usage of remote sensing
  5. to publish and distribute HAB reference materials in CD
  6. to establish a network of national focal points and update a WESTPAC-HAB membership list of scientists and managers in the region
  7. to disseminate activities of GEOHAB
  8. to seek interaction with other projects on HAB and interact with the other IOC regional networks or groups on HAB
  9. to develop monitoring research on blooming of toxic benthic microalgae in coastal areas affected by Tsunami

WESTPAC-HAB Workshops

  1. held in August 2007 in conjunction with the JSPS-LIPI Seminar, Yogyakarta, Indonesia
  2. held at the IOC/WESTPAC International Scientific Symposium, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, 24 May 2008

WESTPAC-HAB TTR project

The TTR has three components:

  1. Technical standardization exercise/Research planning meeting
  2. Cooperative field survey/laboratory analysis
  3. Presentation of result at scientific meetings and in journals


TTR1: Cyst Mapping (by Ms. Elsa Furio)

Activities

  • 2nd cooperative field survey in the Philippines in November 2005 using financial support from JSPS, Japan
  • 3rd cooperative field survey in Indonesia in May 2006 using financial support from JSPS, Japan

TTR2: HAB Species Characterization (by Dr. Gires Usup)

Activities

  • Project formulation and technical standardization meeting at UKM, Malaysia, in May 2006 by IOC support (JFiT)

TTR3: Use of ELISA Kit for PSP toxin detection (by Dr. Shigeru Sato)
