Second IOC/WESTPAC Training Course on “Water Quality and its Impact on Coral Reefs”, Sanya, Hainan, China, 8-11 June 2011

The “Coral Reefs under Climate and Anthropogenic Perturbations” (IOC/WESTPAC-CorReCAP) Project was established at the Seventh Intergovernmental Session of IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (26-29 May 2008, Sabah, Malaysia), with objectives to:

i. understand the biogeochemical and ecological nature of coral reefs in WESTPAC in different environmental settings, as well as different types of human interventions;
ii. evaluate the consequences of the impacts of climate change and human activities on the health of coral reefs and their sustainable use; and
iii. promote capacity building in areas related to research on coral reefs through sharing scientific knowledge and training activities.

The mission of this project will be carried out through three workshops and training courses, as well as activities between meetings in 2009-2012.

It was highlighted at the first Workshop on IOC/WESTPAC-CorReCAP in Shanghai (23-26 May 2009), that training activity should be an important component in developing collaborations on coral reef research among member states. To the end, the first IOC/WESTPAC Training Course: “Impact of Sedimentary Dynamics and Biogeochemistry on Coral Reefs” was successfully organized at Koh Samui, Thailand during 15th – 18th June 2010.

With feedbacks received, the second IOC/WESTPAC Training Course on “Water Quality and its Impact on Coral Reefs” is designed to meet the objectives of:

i. building capacity on the impacts of water quality on coral reefs;
ii, establishing an international network in the field of water quality on coral reefs;
iii. identifying cooperative activities concerning impacts of water quality on coral reefs in the WESTPAC region; iv. sharing information, technology and methodology among researchers and experts from inside and outside the WESTPAC region.

The training activity will be organized at Sanya, Hainan Island, China, from 8-11 June 2011. For detailed information, please download the annoucement and the application form.
