The Republic of the Philippines is an island nation situated in South-East Asia between the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea. It is an archipelago comprising of 7,107 islands. The nearest neighboring countries are Brunei Darussalam, China, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia. The Philippines has a population of just over 93.2 million people, making the island nation the one of the most populous countries in the world. The Philippines has one of the longest coastlines in the world and a population density of about 335 per square kilometres (UNESCO 2009a).
