Located south of the equator, about one thousand kilometres north of Fiji, the Tuvalu archipelago stretches 70 kilometres in circumference and encloses 200 square kilometres of lagoon (UNESCO 2008). Tuvalu comprises nine islands with a 24 kilometres (Central Intelligence Agency n.d.) long coastline and a total land area of 30 square kilometres (UNESCAP 2011). With an estimated population of 11 thousand (UIS n.d.) and a population density of 378 persons per square kilometres (UN DESA n.d.), Tuvalu is the second-least populated independent country in the world (Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade n.d.).
